A process of keen observation and being nominated for the blog

In answer to Georgia Rauch’s questions:

The above creation is a detail of another much larger painting.  I enlarged a miniscule part of a larger completed work and then repainted it large.  This was done over several weeks for several parts of several different paintings from the tree series.  What joy I received from enlarging the brushstrokes to be viable parts of another work, and found that the works were themselves powerful and beautiful to view.

I was nominated by Georgia Rauch for

Need some Inspiration

Mixed Media: pastel and acrylic paint

Purchased by Rob and Sally Fitch in 2010

                                                                                                             crowd of trees

I have to admit that I am in a very deep slump.  I find myself thinking about the images I want to produce, looking at others’ work, and not being able to put paint to canvas.  I completed a work in oil, and though I have not painted in oil in quite a while it was fun to do.  Yet, I am not satisfied with the work- it actually brings back all the problems I have encountered in the past with my shortcomings in mark making.  So, I guess the stewing period is about getting ready to rebirth in a whirlwind, much like I did in 2003- getting out all the pent up emotions, desires and visions that were cooped up together for so long.  And now I struggle with decisions. Decisions about what to paint ON for crying out loud, what to paint exactly, and how to paint (expressively, painterly, or realistically).  So, today I am taking a pledge to get one work out a month- even if it hurts, stinks or pisses me off.  I need to just get some things that I have been thinking about doing out-whether or not I or anyone else appreciates the work.

More Art!

a333333   This work is actually an enlarged and painted portion of another work in the tree series.  I took several “slices” of other works and enlarged them on canvas using the same kinds of brush strokes and color.  The thickness of the paints were the most challenging but rewarding and I found that the “concrete” to abstract process exhilarating.  Now I have these large canvases unstretched as I have not wanted to show them, and the energy to get them all to that point(as well as expense) will be great.

I wish to thank Georgia Rauch at MckinleyMilestones for nominating me for the Liebster award.  Please see next blog for rules, nominated blogs, questions and answers to others.

Drawings from Life

Image

NAKED Man resize4

Holy naked man-  hold still!  This drawing was taken from an amalgamation of several drawings from male models and is an ink and charcoal drawing.  I love drawing from the model- it is the most difficult exercise because the model never returns to exactly the same position after their breaks, which forces you to be flexible and love each try.

14″ X 18′ on paper.

Pencil Drawings of trees

IMG_0745IMG_0728

These drawings were of trees of the mind.  I added and deleted what I wanted to.  The tree on the left above is only 12″ x 16 ”  and the one on the right is 20″ x 30″. both on paper.  The drawings were done by candlelight, flashlights and lantern during the evenings in Temagami, Ontario during the summer of 2010.
